Not knowing how to define contact surface of 3D contact
« on: July 14, 2024, 05:13:05 AM »
Dear professors,
I am learning contact facility in FEAP, and in manual, I found the surface definition example for 2D, and I am curious about 3D case, I have attached a example picture, a shell ball, and a shell surface. The shell ball contains both triangles and quadrilaterals.
In the picture, there are the node number and element number, and the .inp file which has the format of node coordinates and element numberings similar to feap input fille.
I am willing to make the whole ball and surface in the contact, can you give me some instructions of defining the contact surface of the surface and especially the ball.
Thank you very much for your assistance.

Your input file is for Abaqus not FEAP.

You are starting with a fairly big problem to learn use FEAP.    Start small, read the manuals and learn.

Dear Professor Taylor,
Thanks for your reply and suggestions, and I am looking through the manuals, but I have something to make sure whether it is ture for my throughts.
In contact manual, one sentence in 1.1.2 Restrictions on input data said that: A contact surface must be defined with facets all of the same type and number
of nodes. Does it mean that for one contact surface, it is not allowed to include both TRIA and QUAD type under SURF command, if so, for a surface which contains both triangle and quadrilateral and supposed to be in a contact, whether two SURFs are needed which are for TRIA type and QUAD type separately. >-<
I am reading manuals through can't fully understand, I desperately need your help.
Thanks very much

I am on a trip without a computer, so need to check if mixing triangles with quads could work.  One option is just points. With the plate being the surface and shell nodes the nodes in node to surface contact.
